Lara is a suburb located in the Greater Geelong region of Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 18 kilometers northeast of Geelong city center and about 55 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. The suburb is surrounded by several other localities, including Little River to the north, Avalon to the south, and Lovely Banks to the east. Lara is accessible via the Princes Freeway, which runs through the northern part of the suburb, as well as the Lara railway station, which provides regular train services to Melbourne and Geelong.
Lara was originally inhabited by the Wathaurong Aboriginal people, who were displaced by European settlers in the 19th century. The area was used for agriculture and grazing in the early days of European settlement, with the town of Lara being established in the late 1800s. The suburb continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the construction of the Princes Freeway and the establishment of the Lara railway station contributing to its development. Today, Lara is a thriving residential and industrial suburb with a rich history.
Lara is home to several tourist attractions, including the Serendip Sanctuary, a wildlife sanctuary that is home to many species of birds, kangaroos, and other native animals. The You Yangs Regional Park is also located nearby, offering opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
