Leopold is a suburban town located in the Bellarine Peninsula region of Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 10 kilometers east of the city of Geelong, and about 85 kilometers southwest of Melbourne.
The area was originally inhabited by the Wathaurong Indigenous people. In the mid-19th century, European settlers arrived and established farms. The town was named after Prince Leopold, the fourth son of Queen Victoria. Leopold grew as a farming and dairy community and later as a residential suburb for nearby Geelong. In recent years, the town has seen rapid growth and development, with new housing estates, shopping centers, and community facilities. Today, Leopold is a thriving community with over 16,000 people.
Leopold has several attractions for tourists to explore. The Bellarine Rail Trail is a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and enjoying beautiful scenery. The Lake Connewarre State Wildlife Reserve is great for bird-watching and water activities. Adventure Park is a popular family destination with thrilling rides and water slides. The historic Leopold Memorial Hall hosts regular events and markets. The Flying Brick Cider House offers tours and tastings of their delicious ciders. The Bellarine Peninsula Railway offers scenic train rides through the countryside. Finally, nearby Portarlington Beach is a beautiful spot for swimming, fishing, and relaxing on the sand.
Leopold has several schools catering to primary and secondary education. These include Leopold Primary School, St. Anne`s Catholic Primary School, Gateway Plaza Primary School, and Bellarine Secondary College.
